Arrest Made in Connection with Fatal Explosion at Jehovah’s Witness Gathering in India

A former Jehovah’s Witness has been detained in southern India on suspicion of setting off an explosive device at a denomination gathering, killing three people and wounding 50 others.

The incident took place at the Zamra International Convention Center in Kalamassery, Kerala state, where hundreds of Witnesses were gathered for a prayer session. An improvised explosive device placed inside a tiffin box was believed to be the cause of the blast, according to the state’s top police officer.

The suspect, Dominic Martin, a former member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, posted a video on Facebook claiming responsibility for the attack before surrendering to the police. In the video, Martin stated that he carried out the blast because he believes the Jehovah’s Witness theology is dangerous, as it teaches that all people of the world would perish and only Witnesses will live.

Jehovah’s Witnesses identify as Christians but are guided by distinctive beliefs and practices, and are known for their door-to-door proselytism. In India, they have about 60,000 followers.

Authorities are still trying to verify Martin’s claims of responsibility for the blast. The incident has sparked concerns about religious intolerance and extremism in the country.

The suspect is currently in police custody, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The local Jehovah’s Witness community is mourning the loss of their fellow members and praying for the recovery of those who were injured in the attack.
