Migrants endure freezing temperatures for hours while waiting for open shelter bed in NYC

Recently, New York City’s migrant adult population has faced new struggles as they seek housing placement following their 30 day stays in the city’s shelter system. To reapply for temporary housing, adults with 30-day eviction notices have been directed to the St. Brigid site in the East Village. This change has resulted in long lines in freezing temperatures as well as a lack of adequate facilities and confusion for many migrants. Officials have stated that the city’s full capacity and decrease in available resources has led to the new chaos. Moreover, Mayor Eric Adams believes the shelter policy should be rolled back since the city has no more room to house new arrivals. Ultimately, the city aims to expand efforts to help migrants apply for work permits and immigration status. In the meantime, the long queues and lack of accommodation outside of the St. Brigid site continues to be a major obstacle for the city’s migrant population.
