Beloved stingray at North Carolina aquarium dies after going viral

The stingray named Charlotte, who gained fame for being pregnant without being in contact with male stingrays, has sadly passed away. Charlotte was being treated for a rare reproductive disease at The Aquarium & Shark Lab and despite efforts from her medical care team, she did not survive.

Charlotte became a viral sensation in February when it was discovered she was pregnant, leading to speculation about whether the pups were a result of parthenogenesis or cross mating with a small shark. However, in late May, it was revealed that she had developed a rare reproductive disease affecting her reproductive system, ultimately leading to her passing.

The Aquarium & Shark Lab announced Charlotte’s death on Facebook, expressing their sadness at the loss. As a result of her passing, the aquarium will remain temporarily closed while staff tend to the other fish and animals in their care.

This news has saddened many who followed Charlotte’s journey, from the initial excitement of her pregnancy to the devastating outcome of her passing. Despite the efforts of her dedicated care team, Charlotte’s life was unfortunately cut short due to this rare reproductive disease. The legacy of Charlotte will live on through the memories of all those who were touched by her story.
