Conservative group insists NC lawmakers’ bourbon tour scandal is exaggerated

A recent complaint posted on Reddit accused a conservative group, Greater Carolina, of inappropriate behavior during a bourbon tasting tour in Kentucky. According to the complaint, members of the group were rude, disruptive, and inebriated, with some even vomiting without apologizing or helping to clean up. The group’s spokesman, Jonathan Felts, disputed the claims, stating that one attendee had gotten sick on the bus due to a lack of air conditioning and that they did help clean up afterwards. However, Felts did not address the overall level of intoxication at the event.

Despite Felts dismissing the original poster as a “social media troll,” it was confirmed that they were present at the event and had worked in the bourbon industry for several years. The trip was described as a fundraising event, with donors paying for access to lawmakers, although Felts declined to name the legislators in attendance. Greater Carolina is a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization that engages in political causes, allowing donors to remain anonymous and not receive tax deductions for their contributions.

Felts did not personally attend the event and declined to be interviewed about the incident. The controversy highlights the potential negative consequences of mixing alcohol, politics, and fundraising events, as well as the importance of accountability and transparency in nonprofit organizations. It remains to be seen whether any further action will be taken in response to the complaint.
