Elderly man drowns while rescuing grandchildren near Mikana dam in Wisconsin

A 71-year-old man drowned in a Wisconsin dam after helping his struggling grandchild in the water. The Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call on Saturday regarding the grandfather, who had gone into the water to assist a child having difficulty in the water. The children made it to shore safely, but the grandfather was unaccounted for. Local agencies conducted a search but were unable to locate him. His remains were later recovered by a dive team. The initial investigation indicated that the grandfather had taken his two grandkids fishing and swimming, and when one started to struggle, he went into the water to help. He managed to maneuver the children to safety before ultimately going under and drowning for unknown reasons. The Sheriff’s Department extended thoughts and prayers to the family and thanked the first responders for their efforts. The incident occurred at the Mikana Dam on Red Cedar Lake, over 200 miles northwest of Milwaukee.
