Over the weekend, a woman’s body was found floating in Lake Anna in Virginia, making her the third person to be recovered from the reservoir since May. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a body floating in the waters of Spotsylvania County and removed the body from the water at the request of Spotsylvania County. The initial investigation determined that the body belonged to a woman and she was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and identification.
The sheriff’s office had been actively searching for someone who they believed could have drowned earlier in the spring. Maya Olivia Smith, who went missing near Lake Anna in May, was last seen renting a boat from a Lake Anna business on May 11. Her body had not been found after an abandoned boat matching the description of the one she rented was discovered with many of her belongings aboard.
In addition to the recent discovery of the woman’s body, there was also a tragic incident in May where a 42-year-old father and his 14-year-old son drowned in Lake Anna. The father had attempted to rescue his son, but both ultimately lost their lives. The bodies were recovered and taken to the medical examiner’s office for examination. Authorities do not suspect foul play in either incident.
