Myanmar’s military is emptying villages on the outskirts of the capital of the western state of Rakhine in a bid to defend against expected attacks by the Arakan Army, a powerful rebel group that has captured most of the surrounding area. Sittwe, the state capital, is being targeted by the Arakan Army, which aims to capture army outposts in the city. If successful, Sittwe would be the first state capital to fall to rebel forces. The Arakan Army, seeking autonomy from Myanmar’s central government, has made significant gains in Rakhine over the past six months, controlling nine out of 17 townships in the region.
Reports indicate that villagers have been forced to leave their homes, with authorities planting landmines and setting up fences and watchtowers around the area to guard against potential attacks. The military has been accused of planning to demolish 12 villages along the Kywee Tae river after residents were forced to leave. The situation remains tense, exacerbated by escalating violence and human rights violations in various parts of Myanmar.
The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the situation, calling on all parties to the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians and prevent further incitement of communal tension and violence. The restricted movement in the area makes it difficult to verify the reported incidents, including the alleged killings in Byine Phyu village at the hands of the military and their allies. As tensions continue to rise, the international community is closely monitoring the situation in Rakhine state.
