The North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported that online betting in the state totaled $648.93 million in April, its first full month following the debut of March Madness. This figure includes both paid wagering revenue and promotional revenue, with winnings totaling $538.4 million. Gross wagering revenue for the month was $105.25 million, with $5.28 million in void wagers.
Compared to March, April saw a decrease in winnings by approximately $52.3 million and a $10.37 million decrease in overall bets wagered. Despite this, gross wagering revenue increased by 53.8% in April. North Carolina has an 18% tax rate on gross wagering revenue, with proceeds benefiting problem gambling treatment and youth sports programs.
The state allocated $2 million annually to gambling addiction education and treatment programs, $1 million to North Carolina Amateur Sports for youth sports opportunities, and up to $300,000 to collegiate athletic departments at 13 state universities. North Carolina is the fifth state to surpass $100 million in monthly operator revenue post-PASPA, joining New York, Ohio, New Jersey, and Illinois.
The state has eight licensed online sportsbooks, including bet365, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, ESPN BET, and Underdog. North Carolina reached the $100 million mark faster than any other state aside from New York, marking the ninth time in 2024 a state reported more than $100 million in monthly operator winnings.
