Palace of Versailles briefly evacuated for roof work smoke, no damage or injuries reported

The Palace of Versailles was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon due to smoke coming from renovation work on the roof near the Marble Court. The palace press office confirmed that there was no fire, but smoke was seen in a “hot zone” in the wood in the roofing. Local firefighters quickly extinguished the smoke, and there were no injuries or damage to the building or heritage collections. The Palace of Versailles is a popular tourist attraction with 8 million annual visitors.

The smoke was detected at around 3:15 p.m., leading to the evacuation of tourists as a precaution. They were allowed back in by 4:30 p.m. This incident comes after the devastating fire at Notre Dame cathedral in 2019, which caused significant damage to the historic site. The restoration of Notre Dame is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

While there were concerns about another fire incident at a historic landmark in Paris, the quick response of firefighters ensured that the Palace of Versailles was not damaged. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the smoke. The safety protocols in place at the palace were effective in ensuring the well-being of visitors and preserving the cultural heritage of the site.
