A recent poll from the Pew Research Center reveals that people in 34 countries have more confidence in President Joe Biden than his challenger in the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump. The poll found that a median of 43% trust Biden to make the right decisions in global affairs, compared to only 28% for Trump. This sentiment was echoed in 24 countries, while Trump led in Hungary and Tunisia.
However, despite the confidence in Biden, there is skepticism regarding the state of U.S. democracy. A median of 4 in 10 respondents from the surveyed countries believe that U.S. democracy used to be a good example for other nations but is no longer. This perception has led to a decline in the number of people who view the U.S. as a positive model for democracy.
In terms of global relations, Biden’s handling of international conflicts has received mixed reviews. While he scored higher in European nations for his approach to the war in Ukraine, his ratings were lower in other regions like Africa and Latin America. Interestingly, Trump’s confidence ratings were even lower than Biden’s in most countries, with some regions like Africa expressing more positive views of U.S. presidents in general.
Overall, the poll highlights a divide in global perceptions of U.S. leadership, with Biden garnering more confidence than Trump but with concerns about the state of American democracy. These findings offer insight into how the international community views the current administration and the future of U.S. foreign relations.
