The United Nations is reaffirming its commitment to engaging with Taliban-controlled Afghanistan to address restrictions on women and girls, as well as other international concerns. In a recent conference in Doha, Qatar, UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo emphasized the need for continued talks with the Taliban, who participated for the first time, alongside delegates from the US, Europe, China, and Japan.
The Taliban’s severe restrictions on women’s rights, including preventing girls from attending secondary school, were a key topic of discussion. DiCarlo stressed the international community’s deep concern over these restrictions and expressed a commitment to working with Afghanistan to find solutions. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid expressed willingness to participate in future talks, depending on the agenda.
