A Model Texas Community for Special Needs Adults: Where Joy Abounds

Godwink founders SQuire Rushnell and Louise DuArt shared an inspiring story with Fox News Digital about the Brookwood Community for Adults with Special Needs in Texas. Founded by Yvonne Streit, whose daughter Vicki inspired the community’s creation, Brookwood began as a way to provide life skills training for special needs adults. The community has since grown to house over 250 citizens and offer various activities such as pottery painting and working in the Brookwood Café.

The story of Brookwood started with a series of “Godwink” moments, where Yvonne received unexpected donations that helped kickstart the community’s development. From a $10,000 check to a $30,000 donation, these events gave Yvonne the hope and encouragement she needed to pursue her dream.

After 24 years, Yvonne passed on the daily operations to her daughter Vivian Shudde, ensuring the legacy of Brookwood continues into the future. The community’s vision is to change the way the world thinks about adults with disabilities, and a new 20-minute docufilm, “A Joyful Place – The Brookwood Community,” captures the culture of joy at Brookwood.

The story of Brookwood is featured in the book “Godwink Christmas Stories” by Rushnell and DuArt, as well as Yvonne Streit’s book “Everybody’s Got A Seed to Grow” coauthored by Jana Mullins. Rushnell and DuArt are also working on a new book set to release next year.
