Jamaica prepares for Category 4 Hurricane Beryl as Grenada struggles with ‘unimaginable’ damage

Hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc in the Caribbean, causing widespread destruction in Grenada, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. The storm left at least seven people dead and destroyed buildings and homes on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, affecting almost all structures on these islands. Beryl intensified rapidly to become a Category 5 storm, the earliest recorded in the Atlantic, before weakening back to a Category 4. As the storm moves towards Jamaica, the country has declared a disaster area, imposing a curfew to ensure safety. Jamaica is directly in the path of Beryl, and the storm is expected to weaken after passing through Jamaica. However, meteorologists have raised concerns about Beryl posing an increasing risk to the US, particularly Texas, Louisiana, and New Orleans. The threat of the hurricane turning north towards the US remains high if Beryl maintains its strength. In response to the devastation caused by Beryl, Grenada reopened its airport for relief efforts, and a special flight was sent to Barbados to evacuate the stranded Indian cricket team, who were celebrating their victory before being caught in the storm. The death toll continues to rise, with Venezuela reporting a third death attributed to the storm, bringing the total fatalities to at least seven. Forced evacuations and rescue efforts are ongoing in the affected regions to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Beryl.
