Opposition parties on the left and right in France are seeking alliances in preparation for upcoming snap elections.

Following a stunning victory in the European elections, France’s far-right National Rally, led by Jordan Bardella, is now focused on the upcoming national campaign. With the goal of securing a majority in the parliamentary vote, the party is aiming to lead the government for the first time since World War II.

Opposition parties on the left and right are working to form alliances to counter the National Rally’s growing influence. Despite differences, left-wing parties have agreed to unite against the far right, excluding any cooperation with President Emmanuel Macron’s centrists. Calls for a united front on the left have been made to prevent a win for the National Rally and fight against its racist ideology.

Meanwhile, National Rally leader Marine Le Pen is consolidating power on the right, even reaching out to rival parties for potential alliances. A possible agreement with the conservative Republicans party has stirred controversy within the party, with some members calling for the President’s resignation. Le Pen and her protégé Bardella are urging conservatives to join forces with the far right to address policy goals such as economic recovery, purchasing power, and immigration control.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has met with outgoing lawmakers, preparing them for the upcoming election after Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly. Macron is expected to address the election in a news conference. The political landscape in France is tense as parties scramble to form alliances and strategize for the upcoming national elections taking place on June 30 and July 7.
