Seeking Spiritual Renewal, They Found Themselves Caught in a Tragic Crisis

Tragedy struck in Hathras district, India, where at least 121 people, mostly from poor communities, were killed in a stampede that occurred after a crowded gathering to see a revered holy man. The event, organized by Narayan Sakar Hari also known as Bhole Baba, drew tens of thousands of mostly women, who had come to seek blessings and cures for health issues. The departure of the guru led to chaos as people rushed to leave the tented venue, resulting in bodies piling up in a muddy field and adjacent ditch. Dozens were injured and families were left devastated as they searched for their loved ones’ remains in various hospitals.

At Bagla Combined District Hospital, the scene was grim as bodies lay on ice slabs in the corridors, with faces showing signs of the stampede. Distraught relatives, crouched next to their kin, grieved as ambulances delivered more victims. The tragedy affected families from all walks of life, with one man losing his wife, another grieving his only grandchild, and countless others searching for their loved ones among the deceased.

The holy man, who had gone from being a government employee to a popular guru, attracted followers from marginalized communities like the Dalits. The tragic incident revealed the desperation and devotion of these followers, who had come from far and wide to be part of the congregation. The aftermath of the stampede left a community in mourning, with tales of loss and sorrow echoing throughout the hospital. The unwavering faith of the devotees, despite the tragedy, served as a poignant reminder of the power of belief and the profound impact of unforeseen events on the lives of those affected.
