Biden selects North Carolina’s solicitor general for 4th Circuit nomination

President Biden has announced his nomination of Ryan Park, the current solicitor general of North Carolina, to the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals. Despite Park’s experience and qualifications, his nomination has faced opposition from North Carolina Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, who claim the White House lacks the votes for confirmation. The two senators hope to work with the administration to find a consensus nominee that could earn bipartisan support.

Democrats have control of the US Senate, where committee hearings on Park’s nomination will be held. If approved by the committee, he would face a full Senate floor vote. Park has been known for his role in fighting Republican-led policies in North Carolina, raising concerns among Republicans about his ties to prominent Democratic Party leaders in the state.

Mitch Kokai, a senior political analyst, believes that Park’s nomination was always bound to raise eyebrows among Republicans due to his close association with North Carolina’s Democratic leaders. Despite Park’s impressive legal background, his ties to the Democratic Party leaders in the state have caused concern among Republicans.

Park previously clerked for Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter on the US Supreme Court and worked in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the US Department of State in the Obama administration. The nomination of Park is part of Biden’s 52nd round of nominations for federal judicial positions, increasing the total number of nominees to 251 since the beginning of his term.
