An 18-year-old individual from Columbus tragically drowned on Wednesday while swimming at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The incident occurred at the Gull Street Public Beach Access on South Virginia Dare Trail, where the Nags Head Fire and Rescue and Nags Head Police Department responded to a report of swimmers in distress at 2:51 p.m.
Two of the swimmers were able to safely return to shore, with one being assisted by a lifeguard. Unfortunately, the third swimmer, the 18-year-old from Columbus, was not seen at the time. A Nags Head police officer located the missing swimmer with the help of a drone before aerial support arrived. Despite efforts to save the individual, they were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The identities of the individuals involved have not been released at this time. The other swimmers who were involved in the incident were also taken to the hospital for treatment. The tragic drowning serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, especially during the summer months when many people are visiting beaches and taking part in water activities.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to determine the exact circumstances that led to the drowning. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the 18-year-old victim during this difficult time.
