Social worker gives up license after wife poses as her

A licensed clinical social worker in Florida surrendered her license after an investigation revealed that her wife had been pretending to be her and treating patients on an online mental health platform. The social worker, Peggy A. Randolph, worked for Brightside Health from January 2021 to February 2023, providing services to hundreds of clients via video call. The situation came to light when a patient reported being treated by Randolph’s unlicensed, deceased wife following the wife’s death. Eventually, Randolph admitted that her wife, who had an uncontrolled bipolar condition, had been seeing patients behind her back.

Brightside Health conducted an internal investigation and discovered that Randolph had shared her log-in credentials with her wife, who had been paid for attending sessions. The company fired Randolph and reported the situation to federal authorities and professional licensing boards, while also conducting a security audit and notifying patients of potential HIPAA violations. Refunds were issued for affected sessions, and the company reassigned Randolph’s patients to new healthcare professionals. Randolph agreed not to apply to reinstate her license and pay a civil penalty of $1,000.

Brightside Health expressed disappointment at the breach of trust by the provider, emphasizing the importance of trust in the patient-provider relationship. The company takes precautions against such situations, including interviews, background checks, and license verification for all healthcare professionals on its platform. Overall, the incident highlighted the need for vigilant monitoring and security measures in the telehealth industry.
