A man wanted for the murder of a homeless man barricaded himself inside a Fayetteville apartment before being shot and killed by officers following a nearly four-hour standoff. 33-year-old Shakoor Williams was the subject of a murder arrest warrant in connection with the death of Willie Russell, a 31-year-old homeless man who was shot and killed on Mother’s Day while walking to a friend’s house. Russell’s brother described him as a hard worker who had fallen on hard times due to addiction. Williams, a convicted second-degree murderer, had previously served time behind bars. A second suspect in Russell’s death, Markeith Rushing, is currently in custody at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
The standoff at the Kings Cross Apartments ended with Williams being pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after gunfire was exchanged between him and the officers. The incident is now under investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Nick Russell, the brother of the victim, expressed his grief over the loss of his brother and emphasized that regardless of the circumstances, it should not have cost him his life. The family is devastated by the tragic loss and is relying on authorities and their faith to seek justice.
