A gas leak at Malaysia’s main international airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport, has left 39 people feeling ill. The leak was traced back to an abandoned skid tank at an aircraft engineering facility within the airport premises. Fourteen of the affected individuals were sent to the air disaster unit for treatment, with one being hospitalized. The incident did not affect passengers or flights, and authorities assured there was no wider risk to public safety.
The gas leak was identified as methyl mercaptan, a substance added to liquefied petroleum gas to give it a distinctive smell similar to rotten cabbages for leak detection purposes. The leak was being addressed by emergency crews at the scene. All of the individuals affected by the leak work for three firms operating at the facility.
Police have confirmed that the skid tank responsible for the leak had been left unattended for nine years, leading to the gas leak incident. Authorities are working to contain the leak and ensure that the area is safe for workers and visitors. The incident highlights the importance of proper maintenance and monitoring of potentially hazardous materials to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of personnel and the surrounding environment.
