Several high school students from Wharton County, Texas, have made the proud decision to serve their state by enlisting in the Texas State Guard (TXSG). The TXSG is one of three distinct military branches in Texas, along with the Texas Army National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard. Students in the TXSG undergo training through the Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) while still in high school, drilling once a month and being paid as full-time soldiers. This unique experience provides them with more knowledge than they would receive in federal branches of service.
After completing basic training and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), students are assigned to units within Texas, where they drill two days a month and two weeks in the summer. The Texas National Guard also offers tuition assistance for college or trade school while enlisted, encouraging soldiers to pursue higher education. Members of the TXSG come from diverse backgrounds, including oil field workers, police officers, business owners, doctors, lawyers, and teachers.
The primary mission of the TXSG is disaster relief, border patrol missions, and defense of Texas. Some of the recruits from Wharton County include John Brown, Leyla Piedra, Natalie Flores, Chandler Hinojosa, Michelle Medrano, Emanuel Valerio, Krista Holub, and Ethan Garcia, who have enlisted in various military specialties. These students are making a significant commitment to serving their state and country, and their dedication and sacrifice are truly commendable.
