North Carolina Central Athletics Prepares for Challenges Ahead of Season Kickoff

North Carolina Central University is facing a tough start to the upcoming football season as they deal with off-the-field issues that could impact their performance on the field. Newly hired athletic director Skip Perkins has been tasked with fixing administrative problems as the team aims for another shot at the MEAC Championship and Celebration Bowl victory.

One major issue highlighted by reporter Bonitta Best is the university’s 10-year sponsorship deal with Peak Sports MGMT, which has turned out to be more of a financial burden than a benefit. The contract guarantees Peak Sports a 40% cut of all corporate sponsorships, regardless of who sells them, leaving the department struggling financially.

In addition to the sponsorship deal, North Carolina Central also faces a $500,000 settlement with Duke Health related to insurance policies for student-athletes. Poor management of insurance claims led to the hefty settlement, adding to the team’s financial woes.

On top of these problems, overspending by coaches on recruiting travel cards also contributed to the financial chaos within the department. The administration has since implemented stricter oversight to prevent future budget issues.

Despite these challenges, the Eagles are gearing up to face Alabama State in the Orange Blossom Classic on September 1st, a game that will be aired on ESPN. With the start of the school year and football season fast approaching, North Carolina Central will need to navigate these obstacles as they strive for success on and off the field.
