President Biden has announced his intention to nominate Ryan Park of North Carolina to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Park currently serves as North Carolina’s attorney general and previously served as deputy attorney general from 2017 to 2020.
The decision to choose Park for the position has sparked criticism from North Carolina senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd, who issued a joint statement opposing the nomination. They stated that the nomination is not viable and that the White House has been informed that they do not have the votes for confirmation.
However, with Democrats controlling the U.S. Senate, the nomination will proceed to committee hearings and a potential full Senate vote. Park has played a key role in fighting Republican-led policies in the state as attorney general, which has raised concerns among Republican lawmakers.
Despite Park’s legal and constitutional expertise, his close ties to prominent North Carolina Democrats have raised eyebrows among Republicans. Park previously worked under Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and David Souter and in the U.S. Department of State’s Office of the Legal Advisor during the Obama administration.
This nomination is part of President Biden’s 52nd round of judicial nominations, bringing the total number of nominees to 251 since the beginning of his term. The Senate will now have the opportunity to consider the nomination and decide whether Park will be confirmed to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
