Unveiling of Historical Marker for Lumbee Tribe in Robeson County at Lumbee Housing Complex

A historical marker commemorating the Lumbee Tribe was recently unveiled in Robeson County, North Carolina as part of the NC State Historical Marker Program. The marker, one of nine dedicated in 2024, highlights American Indian culture and history in the state. The unveiling ceremony took place in front of the Lumbee Tribe Housing Complex, where many tribal members reside. In addition to Robeson County, the Lumbee tribal territory also includes Hoke, Scotland, and Cumberland counties.

Historical markers were also approved for all eight of the state’s indigenous tribes, including the Coharie, Haliwa-Saponi, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi, Sappony, and Waccamaw Siouan. The markers serve to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and contributions of these tribes to North Carolina history.

One notable Lumbee Tribe member, Spencer Oxendine, made headlines for choosing to skip a golf tournament in order to be an alternate at the US Open. Despite the uncertainty of playing in the tournament, Oxendine expressed that the experience has been worth it. The unveiling of the historical marker for the Lumbee Tribe is a significant step in honoring and preserving the legacy of indigenous communities in North Carolina.
