Who is the target of Israel’s attacks in the occupied West Bank? | Latest News from the West Bank

Israeli army forces killed three Palestinian military commanders, one from Hamas’s Qassam Brigades and two from Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, along with a mother and her child during a raid in Tulkarem refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The raid also involved the destruction of homes, markets, and entire neighborhoods. Israel claims the raids are necessary for security, but critics argue they exacerbate tensions due to the ongoing occupation.

Since the return of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, raids and settler attacks in the West Bank have intensified. The International Court of Justice recently declared Israel’s occupation unlawful. The UN reports 203 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces or settlers from January to June 6 this year, an increase from the previous year.

Israeli raids target areas like Jenin, Tulkarem, and the Nur Shams refugee camp, leading to civilian casualties and displacement. The army often fires missiles at residential areas, demolishes buildings, and cuts off basic services. Israel primarily targets Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad factions, as well as new independent armed groups. Settlers also participate in attacks, further escalating violence.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) struggles to protect its constituents due to limitations under the Oslo Accords, which established security coordination with Israel. The PA lacks jurisdiction over Israeli forces and settlers, leaving Palestinians vulnerable to attacks. Without the ability to take action against settlers or soldiers, the PA is largely powerless in preventing violence and displacement.
