Duke Hospital Named Top U.S. Hospital, Doctor Speaks Out Against Diversity Policies
Last week, Duke University Hospital was named one of the best hospitals in the United States in the 2024-2025 “Best Hospitals” ranking by U.S. News & World Report. However, Dr. Kendall Conger, an emergency room physician at Duke Raleigh Hospital who was recently fired for openly criticizing the hospital’s internal policy, is speaking out.
Conger claims he was dismissed earlier this year without cause after questioning Duke’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. He questioned the hospital’s commitment to addressing racism as a public health crisis and promoting equity over equality in healthcare.
Despite raising concerns with his colleagues, Conger felt unsupported in his quest for scientific evidence to support Duke’s stance. He also raised doubts about the hospital’s commitment to providing equitable access to treatment.
Conger’s dismissal in early 2024, with his last day in June, has sparked controversy. Duke has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.
Meanwhile, a group called Color Us United has launched a campaign against Duke Health for what they perceive as a divisive political agenda in hiring and training practices. They argue that the focus on race in medicine could compromise patient care.
President Kenny Xu emphasized the importance of merit-based admissions and hiring practices, pointing to a decision by Harvard University to end race-based admissions. Color Us United is calling for Duke to abandon its DEI framework, making it the first elite private institution to do so.
The debate surrounding diversity and merit in the healthcare industry is ongoing, with voices on both sides advocating for different approaches to ensure the best possible care for patients.
