Protests of Thousands Erupt in Response to Netanyahu’s Visit and Speech to Congress

Thousands of protesters are gathering on Capitol Hill to protest the visit of Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demand Congress to stop further funding of Israel’s war in Gaza. Netanyahu is set to address Congress, drawing criticism and outrage from pro-Palestinian advocates for Israel’s actions in Gaza, where over 39,000 residents have been killed. The protests, which began on Tuesday with 200 arrests, are expected to continue with multiple demonstrations on Wednesday. Congressional interns have also joined in, signing a letter denouncing Netanyahu’s policies in Gaza.

Labor unions, including Association of Flight Attendants, American Postal Workers Union, and United Auto Workers have petitioned the White House for a truce in Gaza and to stop supplying weapons to Israel. The United Auto Workers, based in Michigan, a crucial swing state, are among the signatories. In addition, aid groups and organizations have launched a mobile billboard in Washington with the message “No more bombs for Netanyahu.”

The demonstrations are part of a wider movement to call attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to demand a ceasefire. Protesters are urging the US government to stop supporting Israel’s war efforts and to hold Netanyahu accountable for what they see as war crimes. The demonstrations aim to show solidarity with the people of Gaza and to push for peace and justice in the region.
