Squatter convicted and sentenced to jail for unauthorized occupancy of Panama City Beach condominium

A squatter in Panama City Beach, Florida, Olandis Hobbs, has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for using false documents to illegally take ownership of a $700,000 condo. The State Attorney’s Office of the 14th Judicial Circuit emphasized the seriousness of the crime and the consequences of trying to steal property through squatting in the area. Hobbs was found guilty of fraudulent use of personal identification information and grand theft over $100,000, facing 30 years of probation in addition to his prison sentence. Evidence presented during the trial showed that Hobbs filed fraudulent paperwork to transfer ownership of the condo, which belongs to an 85-year-old woman and her children. Hobbs had a history of similar crimes in New York but had never been arrested. The judge expressed strong disapproval of Hobbs’ actions, stating that he had robbed the rightful owners of peace in their old age and deserved punishment. After fraudulently taking over the condo, Hobbs changed the locks and informed condo management of the ownership change, prompting his arrest by the Panama City Beach Police Department. Despite the minimum sentence being 10 years, Hobbs received a 40-year sentence as a form of justice for his crime.
