A tragic incident occurred earlier this month when a father-daughter hike at Yosemite’s Half Dome ended in the death of a 20-year-old hiker, Grace Rohloff. Grace and her father, Jonathan, were descending the cables at the summit when she slipped and fell. The hike is known for its difficulty and requires permits in advance. Jonathan described their final moments at the summit, admiring the view before a sudden storm rolled in, prompting them to start their descent.
During the descent, Grace slipped on a slick section of rock and fell down the side of the mountain. Despite rescue efforts, she sustained severe head injuries and died during the fall. A fundraiser was set up in her memory to raise money for a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as for her high school’s girls athletics programs which were close to her heart.
Jonathan, a principal at Paseo Pointe elementary school, shared that he believed his daughter was called home by God and that there would be reasons for her death that would be revealed in time. He expressed appreciation for the park ranger who accompanied him down the mountain and for the outpouring of support from the community.
Grace’s former math teacher remembered her as a treasure with a sense of humor that made everyone laugh. The fundraiser description highlighted her pure excitement and adventurous spirit, stating that she died as she lived. Jonathan and the community are still trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of a young life full of promise and potential.
