Relatives of Israeli captives reportedly detained during Netanyahu’s US speech: The Israel-Palestine conflict worsens

Six relatives of Israelis held in Gaza were detained by police in the United States after protesting during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress. Five people were escorted out of the gallery for wearing T-shirts calling for a deal to free their loved ones, while another protester was removed for shouting during Netanyahu’s speech. The Capitol Police cited them for unlawful conduct.

The protesters were released after Jewish senators lobbied on their behalf. In a joint statement, they vowed to continue fighting for their relatives. One protester, Zahiro Shahar Mor, criticized Netanyahu for not prioritizing the captives. US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar praised Mor’s bravery in calling out Netanyahu.

Israel’s military recently recovered the bodies of five captives in Gaza, providing closure to their families. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum continues to push for the return of all captives and for an end to the conflict. The Gaza Ministry of Health reports over 39,000 casualties since the conflict began, with 1,139 deaths in Israel and dozens of captives still held in Gaza.

Protests against Netanyahu’s government in Israel persist as families and supporters demand an end to the war and the safe return of their loved ones.
