Report: Violent crime rates in the US expected to revert back to pre-COVID levels by 2024

According to the Council on Criminal Justice’s mid-year crime trend report for 2024, most violent crimes in U.S. cities have returned to pre-pandemic levels. The data suggests that the disruption caused by the pandemic may have been a primary factor in the spike and subsequent drop in crime rates. Violent crimes such as homicides, aggravated assault, gun assault, domestic violence, robbery, and carjacking have all either decreased or remained stable compared to previous years. However, shoplifting has seen a significant increase, particularly in coordinated “smash-and-grab” incidents.

Motor vehicle theft, residential and nonresidential burglaries, larcenies, and drug offenses have also decreased compared to 2023. Despite the encouraging decline in violent crime rates, the report highlights that crime levels in 2019 were still higher than in 2014, indicating the need for further efforts to prevent and respond to violence.

The report emphasizes the importance of local policy responses and strategies in addressing the variations in crime rates across different cities. While progress has been made in reducing crime, the report urges policymakers to take additional measures to protect lives and prevent further violence. With advancements in knowledge about effective prevention strategies, the report argues that the U.S. should not accept crime levels that result in the loss of thousands of lives each year.
