North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is making a change in his administration as his chief of staff, Kristi Jones, is set to leave her post in mid-August to join the private sector. Jones, who has been Cooper’s only chief of staff throughout his two terms, will be replaced by Julia White, a longtime aide who has worked closely with the Governor since his time as attorney general.
Jones, who was the first African-American woman to serve as a North Carolina governor’s chief of staff, has been a pivotal figure in Cooper’s administration, having been a key player in his 2016 gubernatorial campaign and serving in various roles within the Department of Justice.
White, a native of Alamance County, has a wealth of experience in state government, having also served as the chief of staff at the Justice Department during Cooper’s tenure as attorney general. Cooper expressed confidence in White’s ability to continue the progress made under his leadership, praising her significant experience and close advisory role in his administration for more than 25 years.
The Governor’s office did not disclose Jones’ specific new position in the private sector, but Cooper’s release confirmed that he will be term-limited from seeking reelection this year. With the transition in his administration, Cooper is looking to ensure a smooth handover of responsibilities from Jones to White as the administration enters its final months.
