Mali has decided to cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine following comments from a Ukrainian official linking Kyiv to a heavy defeat in July that killed dozens of mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner group as well as Malian soldiers. The Tuareg rebels claimed responsibility for the attack, which was said to be Wagner’s biggest loss since entering the conflict two years ago. Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson, Andriy Yusov, admitted to providing the rebels with information for the operation, leading Mali to break off relations with Ukraine immediately. Mali also condemned Ukraine’s ambassador to Senegal for his support of the attack in Mali, calling it foreign interference and support for terrorism. Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, expressed his support for Mali in a call with his Malian counterpart, as the country continues to struggle against separatist and extremist groups. Wagner, the mercenary group involved in the conflict, has been operating in Mali since late 2021, but has faced accusations of civilian casualties in raids and drone strikes. Malian authorities deny these claims as their military works to regain control of the country and build stronger ties with Russia.
