Sarah Adelman, the daughter of murder victim Nancy Adelman, has chosen not to witness the execution of her mother’s killer, Arthur Lee Burton, after 27 years. Instead, she plans to gather by a river with friends and family for an afternoon of “play and laughter” to honor her mother’s life and let go of the past. Nancy Adelman was a joyful person who grew up sailing and participating in theater, eventually becoming a playwright and poet. She was killed in 1997 while out on a jog in Houston. Her husband and oldest son will be present at Burton’s execution, while Sarah has written a book about her mother and chooses to remember her mother’s joy and positive outlook on life. Sarah hopes that Burton has found peace and encourages others to choose joy, connection, and love in their lives. She believes that by making positive choices, we can create a better reality for ourselves and others. Despite the tragedy of her mother’s death, Sarah Adelman has processed her grief and embraced the sorrow as a way to connect with others who have experienced loss. Through her book and her actions, she keeps her mother’s memory alive and spreads a message of forgiveness and love.
