Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has been announced as the running mate for US Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election. With a background as a former high school teacher and 25-year veteran of the National Guard, Walz has managed to win his rural House district six times despite regional trends to the right.
Since becoming governor in 2019, Walz has signed several progressive policies into law in Minnesota, including restoring voting rights to people with criminal records, legalizing recreational cannabis use, and guaranteeing free breakfast and lunch to schoolchildren. These align closely with Harris’s agenda and have earned him support from the progressive base.
Despite initially being a lesser-known candidate, Walz has emerged as a leading contender for the vice-presidential ticket with Harris. He has made effective attacks on Donald Trump and JD Vance, highlighting their behavior and views that are seen as out of touch with the American people. Walz has also shared personal stories, such as his daughter being conceived via IVF, to illustrate the impact of conservative policies on reproductive rights.
Walz’s inclusion on the “White Dudes for Harris” fundraising Zoom call, alongside other well-known figures, helped raise significant campaign donations. His presence and advocacy for progressive issues have resonated with supporters and have solidified his position as Harris’s running mate. As the election approaches, Walz is expected to continue playing a key role in the Harris campaign, articulating important policy positions and appealing to a wide range of voters.
