Tropical Storm Debby prompts State of Emergency

Tropical Storm Debby Expected to Bring Heavy Rain and Flooding to North Carolina

As Tropical Storm Debby approaches North Carolina, the National Weather Service has issued a new briefing predicting increased rainfall totals and an expanded Flood Watch covering all of central NC. Governor Roy Cooper has declared a State of Emergency, activating the State Emergency Operations Plan to ensure the rapid movement of essential vehicles and supplies.

The primary threat from Debby will be prolonged heavy rain leading to flash flooding and river flooding. Rain bands are expected to reach southern central NC on Tuesday, with total rainfall of 10-15 inches in the Sandhills and southern Coastal Plain. The Triangle area could see 6-10 inches of rain, while the Triad can expect 5-7 inches.

Duke Energy is preparing for the storm, with over 6,100 workers on standby to respond to any outages. Jason Hollifield, Duke Energy Carolinas storm director, urges customers to plan ahead and offers preparation tips on their website. As the storm’s path remains uncertain, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

As the situation evolves, updates will be provided on the status of Tropical Storm Debby in North Carolina.
