Gov. Roy Cooper has initiated an environmental justice program in North Carolina, including the development of a mapping tool called the NC Environmental Justice Hub. This interactive map pulls data from various sources to provide information on environmental justice issues, enabling users to understand disparities and inequities across the state. The goal of this initiative is to ensure equal access to a healthy environment for all residents of North Carolina.
Critics are concerned that the environmental justice movement is more about advancing woke ideologies than actually improving air and water quality. However, the Environmental Justice Advisory Council, led by professionals like Courtney Woods from UNC Chapel Hill, is focused on using data to address disproportionate impacts and cumulative effects on communities.
The mapping tool includes data on climate stressors, demographics, environmental issues, health conditions, and more. Cabinet agencies are encouraged to use the tool in policy-making decisions, including evaluating grant awards and considering energy and transportation projects.
The public is invited to provide feedback on the mapping tool through virtual demo meetings and community forums. Cooper’s executive order also directs state agencies to track goals and identify funding opportunities to promote environmental justice principles in North Carolina.
Through this initiative, Governor Cooper hopes to promote environmental justice, empower North Carolina residents with information, and promote decision-making processes that prioritize health, well-being, and environmental sustainability for all citizens.
