UNC Board of Governors to choose new chancellor for UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors Committee on University Personnel will hold a special virtual meeting on Friday, August 9, followed by a full UNC Board of Governors meeting in special session. The main agenda item is to discuss and elect a new chancellor for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The current interim-chancellor, Lee Roberts, took over in January after former chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz left to lead Michigan State University.

Roberts has received praise for his leadership during anti-Israel campus riots earlier this year, particularly for his actions in response to protestors removing the American flag from the campus quad. This incident drew national attention amid protests related to the Israel/Gaza war.

The UNC system, particularly UNC at Chapel Hill, has been in the spotlight for various social justice causes, including the removal of confederate statues and the tearing down of the “Silent Sam” statue on the Chapel Hill campus in 2018.

The UNC BOG has made headlines this year for its shift away from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives in favor of language emphasizing equality and merit. This change aligns with a new state law prohibiting the promotion of certain concepts associated with Critical Race Theory. The new policy focuses on nondiscrimination, equality, freedom of speech, academic freedom, student success, and institutional neutrality.

Friday’s meeting will be streamed live, allowing the public to view discussions on these important topics.
