Before becoming Donald Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance endorsed a book by far-right conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec that praises fascist dictators for suppressing leftists. The book, titled “Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them)” argues that current American progressives need to be violently suppressed by any means necessary. Vance, along with other prominent conservatives, praised the book, which links progressives to past communists and labels them as “unhumans.”
The book advocates for emulating dictators like Spain’s Francisco Franco to crush progressives and advance right-wing ideologies. It also includes a chapter on counterrevolutionary strategies and tactics to fight against what they perceive as the threat of leftists in society. Critics have condemned the book for promoting violence and glorifying brutal authoritarians.
Posobiec, who is known for spreading conspiracy theories and disinformation, defended the book by stating that it does not advocate illegal violence but supports legal means of persuasion and police action. He argues that figures like Franco and Senator Joseph McCarthy have been misunderstood and that their actions were necessary to protect society from threats to human rights and freedoms.
Critics, including researchers on threats to democracy and hate and extremism watchers, have decried the book as dangerous and irresponsible, especially in the current political climate. They warn that endorsing such extremist views could incite political violence and further divide society. Despite the backlash, Vance has not commented on his support for the book and its controversial ideologies.
