Chrystul Kizer, a Milwaukee woman, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing a man who was accused of sex trafficking her when she was 17 years old. Kizer pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of the 34-year-old man, Randall Volar, in 2018 after he had been investigated for sexual conduct with underage girls. Kizer’s defense attorney stated that Volar had abused multiple underage Black girls and had contacted Kizer after she posted an ad for prostitution.
Despite the circumstances, Kizer was sentenced by a Kenosha County Judge to 11 years in prison, drawing criticism from victim advocates who believed she should have been treated as a victim of sex trafficking. Kizer quoted biblical verses before sentencing, asking for mercy and acknowledging the pain caused to the Volar family.
Kizer’s case has drawn comparisons to that of Cyntoia Brown-Long, who was also a victim of sex trafficking and was sentenced to life in prison for killing her abuser. Brown-Long’s sentence was later commuted after public outcry and she was released from prison.
Critics of Kizer’s sentencing believe that the justice system does not adequately consider the trauma faced by victims of sex trafficking and fails to provide appropriate support and understanding. The case has sparked conversation on social media about the treatment of victims in the legal system.
