The Democratic National Committee is seeking to intervene in a lawsuit filed by Republicans against the North Carolina State Board of Elections, challenging the registration process of 225,000 voters. The Republican National Committee and North Carolina Republican Party argue that the elections board violated the Help America Vote Act by not requiring identification to prove citizenship.
The lawsuit claims that the NCSBE failed to use a voter registration form that required HAVA-mandated identification information, such as driver’s license numbers or Social Security numbers. The board acknowledged this noncompliance when a citizen filed a complaint. Snow, the concerned citizen, subsequently filed another complaint alleging that the verification process of registrants’ identifications was insufficient, but the board voted against it.
Elections board spokesman Patrick Gannon stated that the lawsuit asks for an impossible solution and violates federal law by seeking the removal of registered voters so close to the start of voting. He also argued that the lawsuit misunderstands the data and exaggerates issues with the voter registration process.
Additionally, the RNC and NCGOP filed a separate lawsuit, claiming that state election officials are not following a 2023 state law requiring the removal of noncitizens from the voting rolls. These legal battles highlight the contentious issues surrounding voter registration and the upcoming elections in North Carolina.
