A suspect has been taken into custody after four people were shot and killed while on a Labor Day morning train in a Chicago suburb. The Forest Park Police Department received a 911 call reporting the shooting at the Forest Park Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line Station. Three of the victims died at the scene while the fourth was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The victims were found sleeping on the train when they were shot in what appears to be a random attack. The suspect initially fled but was later located and arrested by Chicago police on a CTA Pink Line train. A firearm was recovered during the arrest.
The victims and suspect have not been publicly identified, and a motive for the shooting is not clear. Forest Park Deputy Police Chief Christopher Chin described the incident as an isolated incident. Mayor Rory Hoskins expressed condolences for the tragic event and noted that mass shootings are rare in the area.
According to a database by USA TODAY, the Associated Press, and Northeastern University, there have been over 3,000 victims killed in 602 mass killings since 2006. Authorities are expected to file charges against the suspect by Tuesday evening.
