Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has joined Turkish side Galatasaray on a season-long loan from Italian champions Napoli. The 25-year-old forward, who had been frozen out at Napoli after a turbulent season, was welcomed by fans in Istanbul and will be paid a salary of $6.6m for the season. Napoli confirmed the loan deal and also hinted at a possible contract renewal with Osimhen until 2027.
Osimhen had been looking for a move away from Napoli after being left out of the squad for the current season following the arrival of Romelu Lukaku. Despite the chaos at Napoli last season, Osimhen still managed to score 17 goals in 32 appearances. Chelsea, PSG, and Al-Alhi were reportedly interested in signing Osimhen, but could not meet Napoli’s valuation or the player’s wage demands.
Napoli, under new coach Antonio Conte, have been busy rebuilding their squad and have brought in seven new players. Osimhen will join former Napoli player Dries Mertens in Istanbul and will help fill in for the injured Mauro Icardi. Galatasaray, who were eliminated in the Champions League playoffs, will compete in the Europa League this season against teams like Tottenham, Ajax, and AZ Alkmaar.
