RNC urges NCSBE to oversee Vot-ER and watch for potential election infractions

The Republican National Committee has issued a warning to election officials in six swing states, including North Carolina, about the potential violation of election laws by a non-profit organization called Vot-ER. Founded in 2019 by Alister Martin, a Harvard Medical School physician and former staffer for Vice President Kamala Harris, Vot-ER partners with healthcare providers to register patients to vote.

The RNC raised concerns about Vot-ER’s tactics, alleging that they are exploiting vulnerable populations, such as those with mental illnesses or undocumented immigrants, for partisan political purposes. They also questioned the funding of the organization, linking it to left-wing donors and dark money groups.

The RNC warned that Vot-ER’s activities threaten the integrity of the election process and infringe on the doctor-patient relationship by turning medical visits into political interactions. Democrats have also criticized Vot-ER’s methods, arguing that patients should not be pressured to register to vote during medical visits.

In response to the RNC’s warning, North Carolina GOP Communication Director Matt Mercer demanded monitoring of Vot-ER in the state to protect patients and uphold election integrity. Congressman Chip Roy also raised concerns about Vot-ER’s voter registration efforts, particularly regarding non-citizens. He requested confirmation that the organization is not registering noncitizens to vote.

The RNC’s letter emphasized the need to investigate Vot-ER’s activities and ensure compliance with election laws to prevent any illegal voter registration. All parties involved are called upon to address the concerns raised and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
