NAACP Seeks to Intervene in GOP Lawsuit Contesting 225,000 Voter Registrations

The North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP and a voter named Jackson Sailor Jones are seeking to intervene in a lawsuit filed by Republican groups against the State Board of Elections. The lawsuit challenges the registration process for 225,000 voters and aims to have them removed from voter rolls less than two months before the 2024 presidential election. The NAACP and the Democratic National Committee argue that the voters in question are not unlawfully registered, as the voter registration form did not explicitly require driver’s license numbers or Social Security numbers before December 2023. The lawsuit filed by the Republican groups alleges that the elections board failed to require identification from prospective voters to prove citizenship, potentially allowing noncitizens to vote. They claim that the NCSBE’s voter registration form did not comply with the Help America Vote Act by failing to collect required information. The NCSBE acknowledged the issue and changed the voter registration form moving forward but did not contact the 225,000 voters whose registrations were accepted without the required information. A concerned citizen filed complaints about the issue, but the board voted against taking further action. The lawsuit also claims that state election officials ignored a 2023 state law requiring the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls. An Elections board spokesman has stated that the lawsuit is asking for an illegal voter removal program that violates federal law and that the allegations of voter registration issues are exaggerated.
