Kim’s Kafe, a soul food restaurant in North Carolina, recently faced backlash for enforcing a strict dress code that prohibits clothing such as shorts, crop tops, leggings, T-straps, white T-shirts, short skirts, skimpy clothes, and cleavage showing. The restaurant defended its dress code by stating that people are showing too much and leaving nothing to the imagination. The rules were posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page and prominently displayed on their front door and website.
The Facebook post detailing the rules received over 10,000 comments, with many people expressing outrage and comparing the rules to the dystopian world of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Some commenters criticized the dress code for being incompatible with the hot and humid summer conditions in the area.
Although the restaurant declined to comment on the backlash, attorney David Daggett explained that the dress code is legal as long as it is applied to every customer in the same way, without discrimination. He used the example of a business owner not allowing people wearing blue shirts to illustrate this point.
Overall, Kim’s Kafe faced criticism for its strict dress code, with many people questioning the practicality and fairness of the rules. The restaurant did not provide further comment on the matter.
