Esmeralda Pineda, a Sacramento woman, was found severely dehydrated and emaciated after being missing for 12 days. She disappeared on August 26 from a mining claim camp in Nevada City, California. On September 6, deputies from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office found her on top of a canyon near the Yuba River and Sweetland Creek in Nevada City, about 73 miles northeast of Sacramento. Pineda was immediately airlifted to a hospital for treatment, and her condition is currently unknown.
The search for Pineda was challenging as the area was described as treacherous, with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers having to rappel into and out of the canyon to search for her. Two deputies were searching the mountainous parts of the area when she was found. The North San Juan Fire Department also responded to provide medical assistance. Authorities believed she might have been trying to return to the Sacramento region when she went missing.
Sergeant Dustin Moe expressed gratitude for finding Pineda alive, as extensive ground was covered during the search for her. The circumstances of her disappearance and survival remain unclear, but the focus now is on her recovery and well-being.
