Authorities are investigating the death of 19-year-old U.S. Air Force Academy cadet Avery Koonce, who was found unconscious in her dormitory. Koonce, a well-rounded student and track and field team member, positively impacted her community and was described as a remarkable leader by U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions. She had aspirations of becoming a pilot, turning down the opportunity to become an astronaut. Koonce’s superintendent from high school, Tommy Hooker, expressed devastation over her passing, as she was a key contributor to her school and community. Koonce was a member of the Air Force class of 2028 and was involved in various activities during high school, including track, pole vaulting, cheerleading, band, student council, and the National Honor Society. The entire Academy family is mourning the loss of Koonce, with Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind emphasizing the impact she had during her time at the academy. The community in Texas, where Koonce hailed from, is also feeling the loss of the young cadet who had a promising future ahead of her.
