Jury selection began in the federal criminal trial related to the death of Tyre Nichols, who was beaten by five former officers with the Memphis Police Department. The proceedings were delayed due to last-minute motions filed and argued under seal, with about 200 potential jurors in attendance. Judge Mark S. Norris questioned jurors on biases and the qualities of a juror, with responses ranging from racial and religious biases to occupational biases. The trial will last three to four weeks and will determine the guilt of three remaining defendants accused of violating Nichols’ civil rights. Two other former officers pleaded guilty to using excessive force and witness tampering. Their sentences, recommended at 15 and 40 years, will be decided by Judge Norris. If convicted, each officer faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, as there is no parole in the federal system. Nichols’ family, friends, and activists attended the proceedings, which saw the community seeking justice for his death through the criminal trial of the former officers.
