Ukraine has introduced new “dragon drones” armed with thermite as incendiary weapons in its fight against the ongoing Russian invasion, with videos posted on social media showing the drones raining down molten metal on suspected Russian positions. The use of thermite, which burns at extreme temperatures, is a new and dangerous addition to Ukraine’s arsenal, enhancing their ability to target enemy forces with precision.
The thermite-laden dragon drones are believed to be developed by a Ukrainian startup called Steel Hornets, allowing for low-flying attacks that can burn through various materials, including clothing, foliage, and military vehicles. While the United States also produces thermite grenades, it is unclear if they supply the weapons to Ukraine.
Although the use of thermite on military targets is legal in warfare, its effects on civilians and the environment are a concern. The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs discourages the use of incendiary weapons like thermite due to their uncontrollable fires and potential harm to civilian populations.
While Ukraine has used thermite on military targets, analysts warn of the dangerous consequences if the use of these weapons becomes widespread. The psychological impact of liquid fire raining down from the sky is considered more significant than the physical destruction it causes, making dragon drones a terrifying weapon in the ongoing conflict. Experts suggest that Russia may also adopt similar tactics if they prove effective for Ukraine.
